Children’s Literature
Neuschwander and Geehan present yet another zany Middle Ages math quest book for elementary grade readers, this time focusing on percentages. With a cute play on words, Neuschwanders limited omniscient point of view depicts Percilla Centwells (of PerCent geese sellers) dilemma. Percilla must divide her geese/feathers to be sold to various merchants and individuals. Lady Di is to accompany her on her journey, which of course is riddled with various challenges as they attempt to manage one hundred geese. Readers will be amused as the story unfolds and wonder how the ladies will ever be able to deliver the proper percentage of geese/feathers. Geehans vivid realistic, textured paintings bring the fun story to life. Math plays a prominent role as the calculations are made, leaving all the characters satisfied. Neuschwander concludes with a page further explaining percentages as fractions and how that is written mathematically. While being engaged in a fun story, this series will help young readers to understand important math skills.
