Embers and poisonous ashes.
After the attack on the palace, Monroe and two of the remaining goddess-touched girls have been taken to the rebel camp. There she is reunited with Cohen and Uriel. The five are essentially prisoners even though Cohen believes he has to work with the rebels to right the wrongs committed by his familyespecially now that his sister, Larkin, has assumed the throne. Meanwhile, Monroe is trying to prove to the rebels that, in spite of her gift, she can be trusted. She also finds herself drawn to one of the rebel leaders, leaving her to question the nature of her relationship with Cohen.
When an invitation to Larkins upcoming coronation arrives at the camp, Cohen and Monroe agree to attend supposedly to abdicate any claim either may have to the throne. In reality their presence is a diversion to allow the rebels to attack. However, in a stunning twist, the pair are betrayed by the very people they thought were their allies.
Captured by the new rulers, Monroe learns that they plan to resume the Culling with the final four girls.
